What to expect at your first cardiology visit

April 20, 2026 · Toledo Cardiology Consultants

A first cardiology visit doesn't have to be intimidating. Most appointments take 45 to 60 minutes, and you'll usually leave with a clear plan — and often, results from any testing done that day.

Before you come in

A few things will make the visit smoother:

  • A list of your current medications, including doses
  • Your insurance card
  • Names of your primary care doctor and any specialists
  • Any recent cardiac imaging or labs (we can also request these for you)
  • A short list of questions you want to ask

If you wear a smartwatch that tracks heart rhythm, bring it. Even a few weeks of rate data can be useful when we're sorting out palpitations.

During the visit

You'll meet briefly with a medical assistant who reviews your medications, vital signs, and history. Then you'll see your cardiologist for the actual evaluation. We'll cover your history, do a focused exam, and order any testing that's appropriate.

In most cases, an electrocardiogram (ECG) and an echocardiogram can be done at the same visit, on-site. If a stress test or vascular study is needed, we'll either schedule that for the same day or set you up for a follow-up.

After the visit

You'll leave with:

  • A written summary of what we discussed
  • Any prescriptions you'll need
  • A clear list of next steps

If testing is pending, your cardiologist will personally review the results with you — usually by phone or through your patient portal — within a few business days.

A few things people often ask

Should I stop my medications before the visit? No — keep taking everything as prescribed unless your cardiologist tells you otherwise.

Should I avoid coffee? Only if you're scheduled for a stress test the same day. For a regular visit, normal habits are fine.

Will I need a referral? Most insurance plans don't require one for cardiology, but coverage varies. Call your plan or our scheduling team if you're not sure.
